The purpose of this This Week In Creative Art is to feature creative and unique works of art, art that I think is amazing, and to get the artist to tell us something about their creation.
This takes us behind the scenes and gives us an insight into what goes into creating such cool art.

First up is a very intense painting named ‘Primal’, involving a lion, fruit, flowers, and a parakeet.

Clayton: What was the creative process like for this piece? What was your inspiration?

Afilimona: My inspiration for this piece was an animal planet show I saw a while back on lions. A fantastic exploration into the world of these beautiful predators. I wanted to do a rich, vivid, and brightly colored portrayal of a lions raw power by using subtle metaphors in the imagery. All in all I’m happy with the way the piece turned out.

Next up is this colorful watercolor painting titled ‘Red Chameleon’.

Clayton: What was the creative process like for this piece? What was your inspiration?

Dominika Durtan: Little bit about the inspiration. Living in South Florida – such exotic environment for the foreigner form Eastern Europe- I was amazed by surrounding wild life. Most of the creatures living there lizards, iguanas, alligators I saw for the first time in wilderness. A friend of mine has a little farm of chameleons down there. I was totally fascinated by these gentle creatures. It happened that working for Office Depot Headquarters as a packaging designer I was asked to prepare illustrations for the paper pads covers. Since this first chameleon, I could not stop painting them. And that is how whole chameleon series started.

Watercolors are my favorites. I like to mix them with ink when painting illustrations.

Clayton: What was the creative process like for this piece? What was your inspiration?

Kaitlin Beckett: The creative process was the opposite of usual, in that I wanted to paint a certain shape first, and the subject matter came later.
I wanted a group of swirling shapes meeting in a central point. I was painting a lot of fish at the time, so it seemed to make sense to turn these shapes into fish and have their heads meeting in the center and their fins and tails swirling outward.

I used watercolour and inks for the orange and yellow, with some chalk pastel for light and shade, and I used ink with a fine dip pen to draw in the detail and outlines. On their heads, behind their eyes and on their tails I used gold leaf in a patchy effect.
